Meet Dr René Moolenaar - a vital force in our strategic oversight!
One of the reasons why Crunch stands out amongst online accountants is our exceptional team.
Today we’re thrilled to introduce Dr. René Moolenaar, our Non-Executive Director. Having worked with Crunch since its inception in 2009, René has played a crucial role in shaping our strategic vision and ensuring strong financial oversight. His deep expertise and commitment to innovation have played a vital role in our success.
Inside the role of a Non-Executive Director
1. When did you start working with Crunch?
I started working with Darren (Founder and CEO of Crunch) in 2009, developing the first financial plan that was used to raise finance from the first significant group of investors.
2. That’s wonderful - so you’ve been with Crunch since the start! Can you tell us a little more about your role and responsibilities?
I provide independent oversight and guidance to the Board and Leadership team and keep a keen eye on the financial performance and governance of the business and contribute to the development of the strategy.
I attend and contribute to Board meetings and have ad hoc meetings with board members and members of the Leadership Team as required.
3. What does a typical day look like for you?
Given that I am a NED and board advisor for a few organisations as well as an Associate Professor in Strategy at the University of Sussex Business School, my typical day involves activities for organisations such as Crunch as well as doing research/scholarship and teaching for the Business School.
4. Sounds like your days are busy! We’d love to hear more about a recent project that really excited you?
I have been working with the Crunch Board and Leadership Team on the potential benefits of using AI. Early on we agreed that the benefits could be significant in terms of customer service, efficiency and job satisfaction.
The challenge was to get a pilot project going knowing that the team was already at capacity. However, at Crunch, we never shy away from a challenge and through sheer effort and perseverance, we are now experiencing the initial benefits of this. All credit to the team!
5. As a Non-Executive Director, your role in supporting the team is so important. How do you go the extra mile for the team and the organisation?
I am not sure if this qualifies as going 'above and beyond' but what is important as a NED is to always be approachable, always stay calm no matter how challenging the circumstances, and always have the organisation and its people at the top of the priority list.
Let’s learn more about you!
6. Now for something a bit more light-hearted! What’s an interesting fact about yourself that might surprise us?
I used to be a beekeeper, looking after two hives with approximately 80,000 bees in total.
7. Wow - that’s amazing! Do you have any hidden talents or passions?
I am passionate about sustainability and leading a life that minimises the impact on our climate. I have run a carbon literacy training course with colleagues at the Business School.
