When a limited company director in the UK sets up a limited company or files a Confirmation Statement at Companies House, they’re required to provide a ‘service address’. This is in order to receive correspondence from Companies House and HMRC, among other important official bodies.
As anyone is able to see your company’s service address on the public record, many people prefer to provide an alternative to their home address. When a company is incorporated Companies House does require directors to provide their “usual residential address” as well, but this is not shown on the public record and is only made available to credit reference agencies and specified public authorities.
What are the requirements for a director service address?
Directors don’t need to operate a business from their listed service address – or even visit it – but they’ll need to ensure someone is there to forward any correspondence received at the service address. Unlike the company’s registered office address, the address you provide as a service address can be either residential or commercial and doesn’t even have to be in the UK.

Who else needs to provide a service address?
If you’re a Person of Significant Control (PSC) of your company but not a director, you still need to provide a service address.
A PSC is an individual who:
- Holds more than 25% of shares or voting rights in the company
- Holds the right to appoint or remove the majority of the board of directors of the company
- Has the right to exercise significant influence or control over a company or other entity such as a trust.
Other company representatives who need to provide a service address are Company Secretaries and LLP members.
